Wood Wick Trimming

At 76008 Candle Co., we always use crackling wood wicks. If you’ve never used a crackling wood wick candle before, there are some tips and tricks to care for the wood wick so that it burns well and makes your candle last longer.

The first thing to note is that the larger the wick is, the larger the flame will be. And the larger the flame is, the faster the candle will melt. As a rule, try to keep the wood wick trimmed to about ¼ inch. At this height, it can burn the candle steadily for four to five hours.

Another tip is to burn your candle for no less than four hours at a time. This will ensure that the wax of the soy candle melts all the way to the edges of its container. If you blow it out too early, there will be a crater in the middle of your candle around the wick. If you do this repeatedly, it will eventually create a wall of wax around the edge of the container that won’t melt.

To trim your wood wick candle, you can either try to scrape the burned wick off before lighting or you can use a wood wick trimmer. While scraping the wick is convenient because you don’t need to use any extra tools, you could end up breaking off larger portions of the wick than you intended. Alternatively, you can use 76008’s Steel Wood Wick Trimmer for a more precise trim. This scissor-like tool features an ergonomic shape that makes it easy to reach and trim the wick as your candle burns down.
